Country: | I gotta believe that it was his idea, not Bush's. He probably read the election results as a civil mandate to change the management of the war. He likely took it personally. I seem to recall that he and Cheney had already expressed desire to leave and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

While I think he did a good job in forcing change into the Pentagon, I dont think his management style won him any friends.

While I think he did a good job in forcing change into the Pentagon, I dont think his management style won him any friends. | I agree. His legacy will probably be a new military philosophy, which was needed. There is a more trim and effective military now than when he took office. Unfortunately, the military is adverse to change and reacts negatively. That is why he got so much critisizm from the military. I do think he made some mistakes in Iraq, mainly in preparations for follow-up, but then, is that a military function? I guess it is now.
In reality, Bush should have let him and Cheney leave at the last election. It would have given the impression that Bush was adapting to changes in Iraq. It would have also set up a successor for the White House.
It's gonna be a tough two years. I am mostly concerned about losing the Senate since I believe the most dangerous threat to democracy is activist judges.
Now the Democrats have inheirted Iraq. Will they build up the force or will they start a withdrawl that will probably lead to defeat? I'm betting the latter. |

| In the late 90's, the Pentagon was still stuck in a cold war mentality. Rumsfeld gets kudo's for forcing that change. His mistakes in Iraq was his refusal to look at worst case scenario's in a post war Iraq without a ruthless strongman to make sure everyone behaved. Quote: |

| I didnt think after the election in 2004 that Iraq was in a tail spin. Quote: |

| Well, we do need to change htings in Iraq. If the democrats can force some change, then great. But the'yre also smart enought to know that Iraq is such a mess right now that they should do nothing about it untill 2008.

Country: | well not that Rummy tried but not sure if Gates can do any better. We need to get cranked up in a hurry and squash the bugs that are there. the whole Baghdad thing from the get go was done in a slow methodical way warning everyone in Iraq: " here we come, are you ready ? " It really should of been done like a Blitzschlacht and then move on to Tehran or Damascus with the same motive. We farted around too long in Nam and it got us nothing but body bags |

Country: | Wow not too surprising but I was not thinking right now. That is one job I would not want, some jobs you are hired to be fired and that is one. Not that he was fired but he took so much flak. Very tough job.

Country: | Some of his changes were good, as mentioned above - however the timing was aweful. Trimming down forces while engaged in OIF and OEF was not exactly the right thing at the right time...
Also - the dems aren't in much of a position to effect any change in Iraq right now anyway.

Country: | eagles I echo your sentiments - God bless the naval aviators! Speaking of which - OT - as I was leaving NAS Whiting they stopped calling students "Student Naval Aviators" or SNAs, and starting using SMA for I presume Student Military Aviator (to cover the landlubbin air force)... toss that one out to your son to see if his squadron does that also

Country: | I think it will take a lot of flack off Bush's back, who is threatened already with Dem's now in a position to impeach him. Maybe this will appease them a little with a Secretary of Defence that looks tailored to meet Dem demands. (I doubt it. They have had it coming for Bush a long time.)
I'm not looking forward to a President resigning from the pressure. A disgraceful end to the bitter Bush years. The Terrorists would love that idea.
