S Africa Chinese 'become black'

The High Court in South Africa has ruled that Chinese South Africans are to be reclassified as black people.

It made the order so that ethnic Chinese can benefit from government policies aimed at ending white domination in the private sector.

The Chinese Association of South Africa took the government to court, saying its members had been discriminated against.

An estimated 200,000 ethnic Chinese live in South Africa.

The association said their members often failed to qualify for business contracts and job promotions because they were regarded as whites.

The association said Chinese South Africans had faced widespread discrimination during the years of apartheid when they had been classified as people of mixed race.

The BBC's Mpho Lakaje in Johannesburg says the Broad-Based Economic Empowerment and the Employment Equity Acts were designed to eradicate the legacy of apartheid which left many black people impoverished.

The laws give people classed as blacks, Indians and coloureds (mixed-race) employment and other economic benefits over other racial groups.

The Black Economic Employment concept was initiated by the governing ANC to help previously disadvantaged individuals - to start their own businesses or become part of existing companies - thus redressing the country's historic inequalities.

Johannesburg - The University of Cape Town's admission guidelines are the subject of a complaint lodged with the Human Rights Commission by the Freedom Front Plus in the Western Cape.

The FF Plus claims the university's admissions policy for medical studies is racist, the party's youth campus spokesperson James Kemp said in a statement on Thursday.

According to Kemp, the guidelines stipulated that black students obtain an average of 74% to qualify for medical studies, coloureds 78%, Indians 88% and whites 91%.

Slamming the policy as unconstitutional, Kemp said it was "ridiculous" that years after the scrapping of laws on racial classification these types of practices were still allowed at public institutions....

It is Apartheid over again. My old birth certificate said at the end of my ID number if I was white or not, now what the hell are they doing classifying people black or white again? I thought everyone were the same?

He he he... No, it had 008 at the end that meant white, it now has 081 at the end that means nothing. It kept people from stealing other peoples ID's or identities, but now they do it like wild fire.

It was like this. If your number ended with the following it meant what you were. (The first two numbers of the last three meant the following)

White: 00 10
Cape Coloured: 01 11
Malay: 02 12
Grioua: 03 13
Chinese: 04 014
Indian: 05 15
Other Asian: 06 15
Other Coloured: 07 17

The center part of out SA ID number means if you are male or female and the beginning is your birth date.

Why do they want to use the white or non white system again if it actually means nothing. It just shows you how they think here.
