Alright, calling them scum was a bit harsh. But I was calling the country scum, not always the entire population, to be fair. I still don't like Israel, but I dislike Arabia even more. So, I apologise for calling them scum. But I don't apologise for my feelings toward Israel, or any other nation for that matter.

Thanks, d. You certainly have a right to your opinion and I respect that. I just like to keep the country bashing to a minimum. No country is ever going to be able to claim benevolence.

'Misunderstanding' Prompts High Level Talks Between Countries
In light of Germany's relationship with Israel, where both countries maintain extremely correct relations, it may seem improbable to imagine, but the two nations are having what amounts to a military dispute.

Last Tuesday, six Israeli F-16s buzzed the German Naval reconnaissance vessel Alster off the coast of Lebanon. The German Navy is patrolling the area, under the auspices of the United Nations, to ward off weapons smuggling to the terrorist organization Hizbollah from Iran and other hostile nations. It is the first major deployment of a German military unit in such a volatile region since WWII.

It is not clear if the Alster is part of the German UN force, or floating independently as a spy vessel which could conceivably keep track of Israeli Air Force activities.

The Germans claim one jet fired two shots in the air, and the other fighters dropped anti-missile flares, though Israel denies any shots were fired. It does admit it buzzed the ship on several low-level passes. Israel also claims that because it was not informed that the Alster would be in the area, it was forced to investigate.

On Thursday, a German Navy helicopter was forced to divert when several F-16s converged on it, according to the Deutche World. That helicopter had the admiral leading the German Naval mission in Lebanon on board.

Both countries are quick to say the incidents were merely misunderstandings. German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung played down the incident. "One couldn't speak of a 'confrontation' with Israeli soldiers," he said in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also apologized for the misunderstanding.

It's fair to speculate the German Defense minister will have lots to talk about when he meets his Israeli counterpart in Jerusalem next week

I think the argument can be made either way. However, having a visual on a target does not mean blue on blue won't happen. It's a fact of war - although this isn't the same as friendly fire - but mistakes do happen. It's unavoidable. I believe that the israelis claimed they mistook her for an egyptian ship - cannot remember the name, which bore little resemblence to the liberty and was actually in drydock at the time? Memory may be failing on this one. I can see what would prompt it as deliberate - but you ain't getting into the files to determine that for sure.

It would seem to follow that if one can sympathize with the plight of the palestinians vice israel, then they can also sympathize with the mission of the IRA against the UK...

There was more on this on the German news last night. The German ship was part of the fleet patroling the waters. Shots were fired over the bow of the ship by the aircraft.

The Israelis have now admitted to it happening and have apologized. The German government needless to say is pissed off about it. They are to be meeting for talks about it.

Interesting. At least no one was killed this time due to mistaken identity.

I dont get how you can call that one mistaken identity. The Lebanese dont have any Naval Ships that size patroling those waters.

Believe I am not defending Israel Chris, I totally agree with you. I started this thread about USS Liberty, talking about the "claimed" or "alleged" mistaken identity by the IAF leading to USA navy personnel being killed. When I read that letter I posted from one of the Vets on that ship it breaks my heart and gets my blood boiling.

Germany has every right to be pissed off. I agree.
