I am not too up with Venezuelan politics, but I was under the impression that its not all Chavez's fault here.

Perhaps he has been backed into a corner by other powers.

Is this about oil,I wonder?

Chavez is a moron. He constantly tells his people that the US is going to invade them to acquire their oil... just like we invaded Iraq and seized all of their oil - which is why we get oil for 3 cents a gallon here.

The US isn't interested much in Venezuela - it's an extremely unimportant nation, as of right now. There's no threat whatsoever by their military. Engage in hi profile terrorist activities... then maybe that'll catch our attention.

Chavez is just trying to make waves... hey look at me I hate the US too...

Have you listened to this jackass speak? He and mental midget in North Korea must hang out at the Megolomaniac Narcissists Club. He truly is a wackjob. The only reason Iran pays him ANY notice is to keep IRAN in the press and the US labeled as the out of control empire.

Venezuela should hope we kick the $hit out of them. Then they too could become free, independent of US rule, a democracy and a top 10 world economy. Look back in history and you can see that losing to America is to your advantage. The US is the world's most benevolent conquerer.

Once again, a thirld world dictator squanders the wealth of a nation on building up a military to defend the nation against noone.

All that money spent on Russian weapons is not going to help the people of Venezuela, thats for sure.

Venezuela Receives First 2 of 24 Russian Fighter Jets

Venezuela has received its first two of 24 Sukhoi fighter jets from Russia, a key component of a hefty arms build up by President Hugo Chavez’s government, the Associated Press reported Friday.

The first two SU-30 jets landed at the Luis Del Valle Garcia naval base in Barcelona, some 230 kilometers (145 miles) east of Caracas, late Thursday, the air force press office said.

Russia has become the largest weapons supplier to Venezuela with recent deals to sell 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 24 Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and 53 Russian helicopters.

Chavez, who accused the U.S. government of plans to invade his oil-rich country, has signed military deals with Moscow worth some US$3 billion (ˆ2.27 billion).

The U.S. government has voiced concern that the sales would upset the military balance in the region but denies allegations that it plans to invade or unseat Chavez.

Chavez, who faces re-election Sunday, said that he does not plan any immediate additional arms purchases.

“I think that for now what we have negotiated is sufficient for this stage,” he said Thursday.

Russia is also helping train Venezuelan air force pilots to fly the aircraft.

He is likely to win this election. And having done so, he has already informed the electorate that he intends to modify the constitution to allow him to serve indefinitely. Power like God. Well, except for the benevolence. And the wisdom. And the compassion. And the intelligence. And the...

Youre right.

Want to bet Chavez is the one who will start a regional arms race?

Wouldn't surprise me if that was the case, although many of the countries around him cannot afford to have an arms race which means it would probably end up being a one horse race...

Although mkloby is right in saying the US needs some targets although they would probably find them easy ones at that.

First ever pic of a Su-30MK2 of the Venezuelan Air Force, taken over the skies of Barcelona, it's the first day flight of the bird after being assembled.

I don't care what anyone says, that is a beautiful bird. The Su-30 supposedly has upgrades to avionics, weapons and engines. What those upgrades are and their effectiveness, I have not heard.
