Country: | West not doing eneogh for Earthquake Victims? Here is a news artical that I found: Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - Global "compassion fatigue" could deliver a shameful blow to "smashed" Kashmiri earthquake survivors worse than the tremor and years of bloodshed, novelist Salman Rushdie says.
Rushdie said Kashmir, divided between India and Pakistan, was already a calamity. But worse could follow if the West permits the "avoidable catastrophe" of the coming winter's effect on the three million quake survivors rendered homeless, he warned.
Rushdie said there had been so much man-made death and agony in Kashmir that "the bitterness of this natural disaster is not only beyond bearing, it is obscene, a hammer-blow launched against a people who have already been smashed.
"And now, as if to finish things off, the Himalayan winter is setting in, and the greatest calamity of all may lie ahead of us, not behind," Rushdie wrote in an article for the British newspaper The Times.
The 7.6-magnitude October 8 earthquake is confirmed to have killed 74,000 people in Pakistan and more than 1,300 in India. However humanitarian groups estimate the toll to be 86,000 in Pakistan alone.
"Meanwhile, it seems, the world is suffering from compassion fatigue," wrote Rushdie.
"After the eastern tsunami and the western hurricanes, this is not incomprehensible. But the people of Kashmir deserve better than they are getting."
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf last week accused the West of double standards for giving more money after the Indian Ocean tsunami because foreign tourists were involved.
Rushdie said it was hard not to conclude that the West would not aid Kashmiris unless it thought it would help resolve the stand-off between India and Pakistan.
"For more than half a century the world has turned a blind eye to the political problems of Kashmir. It must not now turn its back on the Kashmiri people.
"If the flow of aid does not increase at once, then it is probable that more people will die in the earthquakes wintry aftermath than perished in the quake itself.
"We may be looking at the greatest natural calamity in human history. But in this case we have the power to avert it.
"If we fail -- because we are tired of disasters, or because Kashmir is far away and remote and quarrelsome and doesnt feel like our business -- well, then shame on us."
Rushdie was forced into hiding after the late Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or religious edict, in 1989, calling for his execution because of alleged blasphemy and apostasy in his novel "The Satanic Verses".
The author had a 2.8-million-dollar bounty placed on his head by a Tehran-based foundation.
Rushdie's latest novel "Shalimar the Clown" concerns a Kashmiri boy who becomes an Islamic terrorist. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20051112...N5bnN1YmNhdA-- | This really pisses me off. First of all, the west has there own problems. We are doing all we can to help these people and try and help our own. Pakistan wants to complain that we are not giving eneogh money, he would have eneogh money to give to his country if he were not spending it on a Military and A-Bombs!
These ungreatful assholes. If they are going to be that way, we should just pull out and let them help themselves. Hell we allready have had helicopters on the mission shot at by RPG's!

Country: | Agreed I find all this gum bashing a bit peeving.
One minute the West is branded arse hole greedy, infidel, murdering gits, the next the same nations who harbour terrorists or breed them want help. How about an exchange.
Pack in keep targeting the West or giving sucker to the agents of terror and we can start to talk of aid (although it should not have to be done this way).
I haven't heard much evidence of Bin liner and all the other toss pots in the Middle East putting their money where their mouths are its always the Western powers that are made out as the tight gits
One other point Adler where does Rushdie live,in the ****ing UK because of a Jihad put on him. I get pissed off more that anything when a county gets reviled by some Pimply Faced Hemorrhoid Chewer who gets sheltered by the nations he's having a go at.
He don't mention Dubai or any of the other extremely wealthy Middle East county's and there lack of relief effort. Bloody Ethiopia is on their door step and they did virtually squat when the famines hit.

Not that I mind I've been called an arse hole many, many, many times.
I was just hoping for a new insult as the arse hole one is a bit par-say and with your newly gained rank insulting the lower orders would have move on to a higher plain

I would not call you an ******* either. I was talking about the Rushdie dude who talks **** about the west but lives under protection in the west. He should be sent back home so they can kill him.

Country: | Yes it was very nice. The food was very very good. I will definatly be going there more often. After that we went to a local Rock Cafe and listened to a good AC/DC rotation and drank a few beers.

Country: | Good you can never get enough R&R I had a visit last night from our friends who flew into the UK for a couple of weeks. They have been bumming around the Med on a Catamaran for the last 5 years and before going back to there current mooring in Southern Italy we are meeting them a few times.
