Thanks. {I think } If only it was spin!

I saw Pat Buchanan the other day, he claimed that today's Republican policies are no longer conservative, in many ways he is right.

I just don't understand why strong conservative & patriotic views don't get more traction in the republican primaries.

I'm with you freebird. I think the conservative mantra has slid alittle. I'm holding my breath during these primaries.

Freebird, nobody is perfect. Not even Bush. But he is my president. What I don't get is the venom, the backstabbing, the murderous look in the eyes of liberals when you mention Bush. But nothing but praise for Clinton? Its ok for Sandy the Burglar to steal, Whitewater was a whitewash, the Fosters should get over it but Bush? "My God, he never served!!! Off with his head!!" Its stupid.
Hey Njaco, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Bush, it just makes my head spin with the way that the Republicans seem to be going so far "off the rails".

Some say that Clinton was a good president, with economics & whatever. I'm not really convinced with that one way or another, but his conduct in the White house was disgraceful, I hope the Republicans aren't stupid enough to pick Guiliani because then all their critisicms of Clinton will seem hypocritical.

And letting Sandy "Burglar" off with a slap was unbelievable too

Njaco, why can't the good candidates seem to get anywhere? I though Hunter & Brownback would have done better.

I think McCain might be the best of the bunch at this point.

Hey no prob. We just talkin' is all

But I was with you until the last line. Mc Cain?

I like Mc Cain. I have nothing personal about him. He served with honor.

But....

His policies and agenda are so far from a conservative, he's the liberal faction of the Republicans. I am afraid if he gets in.

It's probably Romney or McCain. Think Rudy might be done by Wednesday.

I voted for McCain in 2000 (wrote him in), but I don't like his positions since (campaign finance, immigration, anti-tax cuts), but I do admire him for his military service.

Njaco I don't think Huckabee has any chance of winning in the General.

Guiliani's personal conduct was too disgraceful for him to be president IMO, besides his positions are way off too.

Romney? He's a bit of a wild card, I wonder how he would do in the general against a smear campaign? He seems a little to slick, but I think he might be OK. But I know lots of evangelicals won't vot for a Mormon.

Otherwise who's left with any chance of winning? {Ron Paul? }

TO, McCain was quoted as voting against the tax cuts because there were no spending cuts attached, which is reasonable IMO. And he had been pretty good voting against "pork", I would hope he would be able to veto any extreme "pork" spending bills that come along.

I also hope that McCain has learned a lesson from the immigration slapdown.

But at the end of the day the president's #1 job is Commander in Chief, the spending & other bills are going to come from congress anyways.

Njaco, right on with your comments on the venom displayed by the libs toward Bush.I like him because I think he is a man of good character and tries to do what he thinks is right. However, if I was to pigeon hole him as far as political philosophy I would call him, on balance, a moderate, not a conservative. I would put McCain slightly to the left of Bush. I don't think we know enough about Romney yet but I would guess he lurks in the same neighborhood as McCain but possibly not as tough in the area of national security. To me our national security is the paramount and most legitimate function of the federal government. The two dems, hillarita and barackski are far to the left of the Repubs, almost communists. They scare me to death. Not only because of their views but because I believe what motivates them is the unquenchable desire for political power. Typically, real conservatives are not as motivated by the goal of power as the left is. Example:Fred Thompson. In my little experience in the CO ski town, we had to practically beg electable pro business people to run for the town council. They would run, win, serve for a term or two, get ed with the process and resign, having reluctantly done their duty. The lefties reveled in the power and would stay in office as long as possible. As to why conservatives don't get a lot of traction on the national level, we face the age old problem with democracies, the guys who promise the most largesse to the voters have the advantage. The conservative message does not promise something for nothing like the left's. We are, on the whole, an affluent, spoiled nation of people who are not particularly well informed and who are mainly concerned with trivialities such as who is going to win which reality show on the boob tube. Our nation reminds me of the description that Robert E Lee pinned on John Bell Hood, "industrious on the battlefield, careless off of it." Our best people are probably found way out of proportion in the military. When it comes to political leaders we probably get what we deserve!

True. I have thought that most conservatives really just want to be left alone per se - live my life, work what I want to do and have the gov. protect my back and my support will go along. For most liberals I've met and been with they worry about the whole world, have no solid foundation in reality but want power to force feed everyone their agenda. There is no service for the country. That is why I think I see in my area far too many dems on town councils, etc. and far too few republicans. The reps are just not interested in forcing people to do what they want. They're more motivated by seeing how to make things better by their own actions instead of forcing others to act.

IMHO.

Absolutely and to boot conservatives don't like to go to meetings. They would rather be out doing something concrete. libs love meetings, the longer the better. The interesting thing too is that, this is a generalisation and not always true, libs tend to come from one of two classes, either with a whole lot of money or not much money. Conservatives tend to fall in the middle ground. As far as true conservatives, we had a conservative congressman in Dallas during the 50s-60s named Bruce Alger. He was to the right of most GOP congressmen. As a result he seldom got "anything" for his district which was mainly Dallas. During the Goldwater-Johnson election Alger lost to a democrat ex mayor of Dallas who ran on the plarform I can get stuff for Dallas. Alger did not even know how to spell compromise and he wasn't even very popular in his own party and could not work the "system." Course I voted for Alger.

Joy, I think you are saying you don't want lobbyists and in the ideal world we would have congressmen who would be all knowing and would only produce legislation that was perfect and right for everyone. That is not reality. Lobbyists have a role and that is to try to inform legislators about all the ramifications of laws they are about to pass. No one is all knowing so lobbyists play an important role in our form of government. There just needs to be controls and safeguards about the influence that lobbyists have.
