BBC NEWS | UK | When Britain and France nearly married

Wonder if it would of worked? The French in the Commonwealth and accepting the Queen as head of state Some how that I think is going to far for most French to except as it would essentially make them a 'colony' of Britain.

Good god Gnomey a proposal of France being a Commonwealth Nation. You could have gaoled De Gaull and had him sent to the old Bailey to stand trial hell would have enjoyed reading that in History of the British Empire

Ya think? Québec, anyone?
Early Canada was essentially just that. A marriage of British and French cultures. Well, I'm here to tell ya that they're still French to this day.

Just not quite as prone to surrender.

Can anyone tell me why everyone (except France and some Nationalist bastards in Québec) hates De Gaulle ?

It's easy to understand for Canadians (and may be a little for British), after all the Dieppe Raid was *his* idea. Plus the fact he compared English-Canadians to the Nazi Army when he came in Montréal in the 60s.

However, I don't understand for the rest of the world. But may be some chapters are missing from my History book... I'm not trying to start an arguement, I was just wondering.

With what you have already stated de Gaulle was universally dispised in Allied circles. After he arrived in England in June 1940 he made demands of the current Allies at the time that were somewhat beyond reasonable requests. During the later parts of WW2 De Gaulle continued making a complete arsehole of himself with the Allies further and virtually declared when invasion took place that he would become intrim president of France until elections could and would take place after Petan was removed. De Gaulle made himself very unpopular with British High Command and with the British Parliament and including making himself unpopular with Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the time. De Gaulle made himself also head of the Free French Forces where other capable generals were already available. He dispised the British and her Empire with out reservation and even after the war had England blacked balled from joining the European Common Market (forerunner to the EU). Needless to say the British kept his sorry arse safe and happy in England for 5 years safe away from the real war. where he could do his gallic posturing in front of a micro phone at the BBC. Now do you understand why De Gaulle was hated by the English and the Commonwealth
