I heard this morning that Russia has closed its stock market for 10 solid days? Anyone else hear this?

Latest news is that Russia has agreed to lend money to Iceland, in return for Ivan being allowed to establish a Naval refueling base on their shores.

Washington announces it's going to buy bank shares but doesn't do it at that time. Wall Street sees $$$$ and starts buying bank shares at the bottom price and runs up the price. Now Washington will have to pay the higher prices and the Wall Street folks will make money selling them to Washington!
Collusion or stupidity, take your pick.

This means we have to rebuild our manufacturing base and sell to ourselves. How is that a bad thing?

OPEC may embargo us again. That means we have to drill our own oil, build new refineries, put up nuclear reactors, rebuild our railways and put all our own money and effort into our own infrastructure. Again, how is that a bad thing?

A severe depression would be strong, bitter-tasting medicine, but it ultimately could be the best thing to happen to this country.

At this stage, it's either that or more of what got us all here in the first place!

Which would, surely, make the final decline worse beyond comprehension.

I hadn't heard of this but must admit, if I was Russian I would consider it a tempting idea worth trying.

Yup... it was in the international news, which we get precious little of.

Little Iceland has been a bone of contention for decades as you know... Britain and the USA have found it a useful tactical site (especially in WWII) , but so has Ivan and the Nazis.

Nice to have a little island half way between Europe and North America, no matter what the cost, eh?
