Country: | As I am sitting here in my tent over in Tikrit, Iraq I just opened a Christmas card from a little girl back in the states and in the card there was a story. I know this has nothing to do with WW2 aviation but I wish to post this story in honor of all the soldiers no matter what country they come from who are away from there families during this holiday season.
A Soldiers Christmas Story
Twas the night before Christmas, He lived all alone, in a one bedroom house, made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, and too see who in this house did live. I looked all about a strange sight did I see, no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the mantel, just boots filled with sand, on a wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, a sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in disorder, not how I pictured a United States soldier. Was this the soldier of whom I had just read? Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night owed there lives to these soldiers willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day. The all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, because of these soldiers, like the one laying here. I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas eve in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakend and I heard a rough voice, :Santa don't cry, this life is my choice; I fight for freedom, I do not ask for more, my life is my God, my Country, My Corps." The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still, and we both shiverd from the cold nights chill. I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark, night, this guardian of honor so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, whispered, "Carry on Santa, its Christmas day, all is secure." One look at my watch, and I knew he was right. "Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night."

#259 | | | Ju-287 info (from a Russian buddy) Evidently info is quite limited even in Russian, but here is what he's found so far: Quote:
On 287 I have found info (looking well, but I don't know is it very reliable):
Ju.287-V1:
type: two-seater flying laboratory (assigned for low-speed measurements)
engines: four of Jumo-004B Orkan(?spelling); axial turbo-jet; thrust 900kg each
maximal speed: 555 km/h (alt=6000m)
cruise speed: 510 (7000m)
diving speed: up to 650 km/h
weight: empty:12 500kg, normal: 20 000kg
wing span: 20.1m
lenght: 18.3m
wing area: 61 sq.m
Ju.287-V3 (Ju.287A-0 and Ju.287A-1) (factory estimation):
type: three-seater heavy bomber
engines: six of BMW-003A-1 Sturm(?spelling); axial turbo-jet; thrust 800kg each
2*13mm guns MG-131 in a tail tower, telecontrolled, with periscope
bomb load: up to 4000kg
maximal speed: 815 km/h at sea level,
860 km/h at 5000 m,
780 km/h at 11000 m
cruise speed (on throttle of 80%):
715 at sea level
790 at 7000 m
range: 1600km with 4000kg bomb load
1900km with 3000kg
2100km with 2000kg
climbing to 6000m alt. - 10.5minutes
to 10000m alt. - 33 minutes
weight: empty: 11930kg, normal: 21500kg
wing span: 20.1m
lenght: 18.6m
wing area: 61 sq.m
Ju.287B-1 with four HeS-011А (1300kg each), and Ju.287B-2 with two of ВМW-018 (3500 kg each) was planned, but no serious work on them was not made.
History: they say on their site pages Ju.287-V3 and Ju.287-V2 was not completely assembled when Soviet Army has captured the factory. V2 was completed in 1947, and no info on original V3 - was it completed or not. They say V2 was almost completed. Was V3 almost completed too, or it was only near the start of its assembling - different sites are contradicting...
Soviet modifications (made generally by German specialists):
Ju-131 (or EF-131) with six of JUMO-004 (900kg each) had speed of 860km/h, range of 1050km, bombload 2000kg; - planned to be made in September of 1946;
There was in project (near 1946) : Ju-132 with six of JUMO-012 (3000kg each) 950km/h, 2250km, 4000kg of bombs, probably on the same base of 287, but really I don't know.
Later modification under the name of "Project 140" is reported having speed of 950km/h in March of 1949 (info from other sites); other source reports 900km/h.
The first flight of 287 was 16 of August of 1944 (probably it was V1); speed of 645km/h was achieved (but maybe in diving).
Other site gives more optimistic estimations on Ju-287-V1 and V2:
- Ju-287-V1 with four Jumo-004 (3600kg all together), 17 flight was done, speed was up to 700-780km/h (other source gives 875km/h).
(Crew:3, wing span 20.10m, length 18.28m, wing area 58.2 sq.m, full weight 22500kg, ceiling 12500m, range 1580km, bombload 3000kg).
- Ju-287-V2 with six of ВМW-003 (4800kg all together): planned speed: 784 - 819 km/h; bomb load: 4000kg.
Did you see American books on unusual flying construction? I can't remember author's name of one I read... It was very interesting, triangle wing made by Lippish (?spelling) and so on. There is also very good book by Shavrov (I don't know, maybe in English it will be Shavrow or something else) about Russian constructions from the beginning of XX century till 1950s or more. Did you see it?
