69 Sqdn Wellington XIII Navigation Radar

69 Squadron RAF operated night reconnaissance flights in specially modified
Wellington XIII's from June 1944 to May 1945 in support of the Allied invasion of Europe. The aircraft flew singly and each had to locate its target, sometimes as small as a crossroads or railway junction, at night. What navigational aids were used?

Mk XIIIs used to equip No 69 Sqn, RAF, in specialised night visual tactical reconnaissance role in 1944-45. Radar was removed and clear Perspex nose fairing in place of turret, for visual observation was installed. Stowage for 54 flares in fuselage (dropped from 3,000 ft/915 m) and open-shutter moving film camera fitted for use at 1,000ft (305 m).
