| Ta152H Prototype Fw190V18/U2 Ok been a bit distracted by other things.....but here is another current build I am doing as a 'Quickie' alongside my Me262 Group Build, I hope to take it to the Melbourne Expo in June. Ta 152H Prototype Fw190V18/U2 CF + OY W.Nr. 0040 This aircraft started out as the Fw190V18/U1, (image below) a development aircraft for the Hohenjager 2 High-altitude fighter program. The Hohenjager 2 program was Focke Wulf’s attempt to increase the speed of the Fw190 at high altitude by the first use of an exhaust-driven turbo-supercharger, it was found that the anticipated performance could not be achieved. Trials revealed that the performance was in fact inferior to Fw190’s without the exhaust turbine system using the same DB603A engine. Focke Wulf then decided to convert the five test aircraft used in the Hohenjager program to Ta152 prototypes. The Fw190V18/U1 transformation resulted in the new designation of V18/U2, becoming the 4th of the 5 Ta152 prototypes. The aircraft was ready for its first flight on the 19th November 1944, just as series production of the Ta152 was beginning it was therefore not used for flight testing but ferried to Langenhagen and on to Cottbus from the 21-25th November for familiarising pilots with the new Ta152H aircraft. On the 23rd of December 1944 V18/U2 was slightly damaged in a take-off crash, it was subsequently repaired, it’s further use is unknown….. On the 6th April 1945 the aircraft was apparently located at Reinsehlen airfield where it was blown up a short time later, according to another source the location was Leck airfield? | Did they associate the 4-bladed screw with the disappointing results? I'm just wondering why it wasn't carried over into the Ta152 program. |

| The Fw190 in the pic above is the C version called Kangooroo.Its main frame was of early A version.But the propeller wasn't the main problem of the prototype at all. Wayne ,are you going to make a conversion ?

| The word u were wanting to use Wojtek is conversion, converting the existing 152H-0 airframe to the C.... Im interested to know if u are too Wayne, cause that would mean shortening the wing span, removal of the supercharger and adding the scoop as Terry asked, as well as forging a new four bladed prop (unless u got a spare).........

| No time for conversions, gents!  I was simply showing you what CF + OY looked like before it's transformation into a Ta152...a major rebuild of the airframe to say the least! The image below shows the aircraft after it had been blown up. Image from Focke Wulf Ta152 by Dietmar Harmann.

| I can well imagine it wasn't any faster. That lash-up of the turbo scoop is about as slick as a brick and looks to have added another 1000 pounds. At best what it gained in power was defeated by drag. Sort of like the F4U-3. That last pic showing an FW all blowed up doesn't appear to be the same plane based on the prop and lack of any under-belly fitments for the turbo system. It also shows the standard exhaust stack arrangement vs collector and over-wing waste gate pipe for the turbo. Or, perhaps this pic shows it after being converted back? |
