"Depth Finder"

Hi all,
Based on RAF reports from the mid 1940's, a crew of a Coastal Command bomber (Hudson) recorded a depth of the seabed, when sighted or attacked ships (eg. 40, 50 fathoms).
What did they use in 1940 to record the depth?
Thanks for any thoughts and sources talking about this topic...
