Hi!
I am researching my great uncle Walter Shofner who perished on the USS Peary in Darwin Bay Australia Feb 19th, 1942. I'm looking for (and knowing it's likely impossible to find) photos of the crew, anything where I might find a photo of him. Or any photos of the ship in action. I have a few photos of the ship being attacked, but any additional photos of that are welcome as well.
Thank you!!

I definitely will! I'm hoping to write a historical fiction book using some of the research. I've got a stack of books on the pacific fleet battles and the Darwin attack specifically that I need to read through, but I'm compiling as much of the photos in a database now while I can find them.

Perhaps this will help you. Decades ago I researched the crew lists for all the ships in the ABDA area. This is a complete roster for those that served on USS Peary during that time frame with USN serial numbers,

USS Peary (DD-226)

Casualty List and Crew Movements

Killed aboard ship during raid on Cavite Navy Yard, 10 December 1941:
Albert Eugene Gates, Jr. Lt. O-071583 (USNA32)
James Knox Gashaw Sea1/c 262-66-32
Roy Patrick George Sea1/c 385-85-43
Carson Jinks Hinton Cox 287-25-31
James Howard Kerr QM1/c 285-66-21
Clifford Alton Lewis Cox 256-32-54
Albert Russo Sea1/c 201-79-05 (buried at Manila American Cemetery, Grave A/14/67)
Lester Lee Throckmorton FC3/c 372-11-45
Cecil Leon Todd SK3/c 356-23-58

Notes: All above killed when a bomb hit the foremast and killed the personnel manning gun director platform (thus I believe Throckmorton was a fire-controlman, and not a ship's cook; I have seen his rank cited both ways). My list does not include the following three personnel you have listed as killed at Cavite:

Epifanio Clamor OC1/c, USNR 121-39-80
Paul Frederick George F2/c 381-33-70
Howard Marshall Santon Sea1/c 212-54-31

I know these personnel were killed or MIA at Cavite, but were they definitely assigned to Peary? I do not see these names on any Peary crew-list I have copies of.

Wounded at Cavite 10 December and removed to hospital.

Later reported back to USS Peary, 15 December:

Edwin Earle Creel, Jr. RM2/c 356-04-63
Billy Eugene Green Sea1/c 316-69-12
Alonzo Denison Hall MM1/c 206-97-63
William Hinton Selman Sea1/c 337-11-67
Clifton Lee Warren SK3/c 337-10-82

Escaped Philippines aboard Lanikai:
Harry "H" Keith Lt.Cdr. (born Topeka, Kansas 08/05/1899; USNA23, died 01/03/69)

Taken prisoner at hospital when Manila declared open city (all liberated 1945 unless noted):
William Roger Birks Sea1/c 223-40-39
Francis Edward Butler CMM (PA) 310-88-89
Calvin Shriver George Ens. O-082356 [born Baltimore, Maryland, USNA39]
Warren Hastings Griswold Sea1/c 381-36-44
Willis Devon Grogg SM2/c 291-55-15 [born 19/12/20; KiA Korea, 14/06/51 as Ch.QM]
Reginald Clement Grosvenor Sea1/c 316-09-07 (died 25/1144; Manila American Cemetery Grave D/4/260)
Donald Wheeler Hamilton, Jr. Lt.(jg) O-081020 (USNA38, died 03/02/45, Fukuoka POW Camp)
Edward Warren Hastings CPhM (PA) 171-29-00 (died 25/01/45)
Henry Ford McCulla GM2/c 274-48-02 (not McCaula)
Luke Marino Pingno Sea1/c 274-48-61 (born 10/11/21, died 20/12/2000, Independence, Louisiana)
Charles Anthony Winig FC1/c 238-46-48 (died 24/10/44 aboard SS Arisan Maru)

Missing and Presumed killed 10 December:
Vernon Elwood Alcorn SM3/c 393-29-35
John H. Patterson Ens. D-V(G), USNR

Notes: I would guess Alcorn died of his wounds, as he was very severely injured. Do you know anything of Ensign Patterson? He is listed as part of Peary's crew, but I have been unable to locate anything on him whatsoever. Obviously he survived, as his name appears on one of the Darwin memorials, so he was probably left behind.

Missing 10 December (probably killed en route to the dispensary with wounded, or as wounded):

Killed 10 December:

Theodore Brandt, Jr. Cox 299-86-74
John Dauga CWT 273-98-57 (not Daugha) [born Nashua, New Hampshire 1897]
Stanley Joseph DeFuentes MM1/c 274-17-48
Ralph Joseph Gioncardi SC3/c 201-58-39
Donald Martin MacNaughton CY 381-71-80
Paul Franklin Platt Sea1/c 300-03-07
Mack Warren Randol Sea1/c 337-41-90
Milton Bernell Franklin Sollis Sea2/c 337-52-35

Taken prisoner at hospital:
Alfred Edward Berio CTM (PA) 206-85-64 [born 23/01/08; died 15/09/95]
William Nelson Peltier, Jr. F3/c 223-74-55
Arthur William Pinkham Sea1/c 375-91-59 (died 26/08/42)
Gideon Howard Spurlock, Jr. Sea2/c 369-36-44

Wounded, not taken as POW (escaped PI aboard another vessel?)
Olaf Fosmo QM3/c 381-81-35

Notes: I also have Dale Chester Stranathan, CMM as killed 10 December, but this obviously an error. There is an R. I. Gioncardi, QM3/c, also with s/n 201-58-39; listed as killed on USS Pillsbury when that ship was lost, which is most likely a clerical error. You have two sailors listed as WIA at Cavite which do not appear on my list:

Clovis William McAlpin GM2/c
Sixto Tagavilla Matt1/c

What happened to these two? Apparently they were not taken prisoner.

Personnel added 15/16 December 1941:
John Michael Bermingham Lt. O-062695 (detached as XO STEWART 01/12/41 & awaiting passage stateside)
Robert L. R. Johnson Ens, D-V(G), USNR (civil engineer on Luzon called to active service as engineering officer)
William Jackson Catlett Lt. (formerly with PatWing 10, assigned to Peary as navigator)

Bermingham promoted to Lt.Cdr. Gustafson to Lt. and Johnson to Lt.(jg) under ALNav 4-42 on 06/01/42.

MAGIC coding group embarked as passengers 26 December 1941:
J. D. Gilliland Ens. D-V(G), USNR
W. B. Hirst Ens, C-V(S), USNR

Thus of 28 who contracted malaria, 9 died, including 2 who were transferred to USS Pecos for treatment and were killed when that vessel was sunk). I don't know details of burial or death dates; the ABMC website lists Solomon and Aders as died 25/11/45, implying they were also lost on USS Pecos, though I don't believe that was the case. Fields and Wagley were buried at sea off Darwin on 18/01/42.

Thank you so much for this list!! It's so helpful! Do you know of an easy way to find a sailor's ship assignment history? I would love to find my great uncle's ship assignments, like how long he was on the Peary, was he on any other ships before that etc.

Charles thank you for putting your list of USS Peary personnel on this forum. Maybe you are interested to know that Melvin Edward Duke BM2/c 359-78-14 Berrimah Hosp. returned to Darwin many times since the Peary was sunk. Bombing of Darwin podtour: a journey back to 1942 He is pictured in the photographs on this site. I volunteer at the Darwin Military Museum and they hold donations received from Melvin Duke.
I am currently attempting to convert and update the online Exhibition that was produced by Northern Territory Library for the 60th Anniversary into some form of hard copy and online biographical story of those who lost their lives on and after the bombing of Darwin 19 February 1942 for the Museum. The Library although still having the data it is a little difficult to locate a whole document. Your list is a great help.
