WWI German U-boat found sunk off Netherlands

A German U-boat of the same era as this one, photographed in 1916, has been found off the coast of the Netherlands.

    March 16th, 2011

Dutch researchers found the wreck of a World War I German submarine in 2009 but kept the discovery secret until this week, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.

The crew of the research ship HNLMS Snellius hoped they'd found a Dutch submarine that disappeared in 1940, but the vessel turned out to be much older. A brass plate indicated the sub was the German U-106, which sank during World War I, the radio report said.

The announcement of the discovery was delayed while German officials confirmed the sub's identity and sought out relatives of crew members, according to the radio report.

A Dutch navy spokesman told Radio Netherlands the U-boat would not be raised but would be designated a war memorial.

    Some more info:

    translation (by google, sorry):
U-106 hit a mine after the first successful mission
German U-boat from World War I found
Terschelling - The Royal Navy has found a submarine north of Terschelling, which was wrecked in 1917 during her first mission. The U-106 sailed back to Germany after the attacking of two British warships off the French Coast. One of them sank and another was damaged.
"The submarine probably hit a mine when returning," says Robin Means of the Navy. "It was then a brand new submarine, with a young crew and captain. The last contact with a submarine escort that was the mine field would result. Then there's nothing heard of the submarine. "Kapitänleutnant Hans Hufnagel was 32 when his U-boat with 41 crew members sank with all hands.
In October 2009 met with Mr. Ms. Snell forty miles north of Terschelling an unknown object. The Dutch navy ship was busy mapping out routes over the Frisian Islands. With the discovery of the suspected ship wreck was the hope back finally missing since June 18, 1940 Dutch submarine O-13 have been found. The discovery set in motion a series of research missions. "In those waters, the R-13 the only Dutch submarine missing. In Indonesia there are also some at the bottom of the sea. "
The mine hunter Hr. Ms. Maassluis examined in December of 2009 the location with the Seafox forty meters deep, an underwater camera. It provided the outlines of a submarine and two months later, a comprehensive attempt to determine the origin of the ship to find out. It was a dive team and the wireless underwater robot used Remus. The divers did a cylindrical air tank of 300 by 44 inches, used to dive and rise to the surface.
In the spring of last year was again plunged into the U-boat and air time was a bottle brought to the surface. The air cylinder was fitted with a brass plate with the serial number and submarine so that it appeared not to
    R-13 went, but the U-106.
,, Then followed a long process with the German authorities to inform relatives, "says Means. "That is why we only now know it." German experts confirmed the correctness of the find. The search for survivors has recently been completed. Then German authorities gave permission to publish the discovery.
The submarine will now be left alone, said Spoelstra. ,, The ship continues to lie and an official war grave. It is possible that a memorial ceremony will take place at sea, but that happens only at the initiative of relatives. "
    Accidental

Certainly the U-106 is not the only submarine on the seabed, but many are not found. ,, Certainly not a submarine from the First World War. Mapping of soil do we particularly near busy shipping lanes. The U-106 was accidentally near a route, "says Means. Jouke Spoelstra, leader of the identification project, adds: "This kind of discoveries is almost always accidental. A dozen years ago, a ship of the hydrographic service passed the same spot but when the boat was still under a layer of sand. "

    Interesting find.
I think is very appropriate that it will become a war memorial since the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War is fast approaching.
