Miner in WWII

My father was trained as an observer and gunner before flying in Italy for the SAAF.
In his Passport his occupation is given as " Miner ".Can anyone tell me what this means ? I know he never did any mining, so I take it that a Miner must have meant something else.

Not that I'm aware of.
When was the passport issued ?
If its post-war it would list his peacetime occupation, not his war service.
