    HONOLULU — A U.S. military team returned from the remote Pacific atoll of Tarawa this week with the remains of what are believed to be two U.S. servicemen who died in a fierce World War II battle there.

    Why would it be believed that the remains are Americans. Could they not be Japanese?

    Typically it has to do with known positions and what is found with the bodies such as American equipment, etc. Until properly identified however, they only "believe" as the first posts states.
