Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

From the Hurricane @ manual, it gives the weight increase for the air filter on the Hurricane II, as " mod # 264 +28.92 lbs". Over all it was a fairly tidy installation that cost the Hurricane about 7 mph due to increased drag and reduced ram. The affect on the Spit 5 is a bit more, as the...

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

The chart you added to does not show boost levels used for the results, much like the table I posted. Look at these reports Hurricane L-2026 Trials Report at 6.25 lbs boost http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/hurricane/hurricane-I-raechart.jpg...

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

It does seem odd as most of the intercepts were at 20 k or above. I have just received my copy of "The Darwin Spitfires" (waited patiently for years) so am currently reading it, so far very interesting.

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

because the graph shows the rotol equipped Hurricane I doing 265mph at 6.25 lbs, sea level, and 12lbs boost for 285 at sea level.

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

Do you have the full reports on the IIa's ? I have not found one of them anywhere on the internet. I was basing my thoughts on reports like these as they do include boost levels. http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/hurricane/Hurricane-II_12lbs.jpg...

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

At first, I was thinking the same, but at the very top of the report it does state that it is a Tropical Spit V

Hurricane I tests would appear to disagree with that. http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/hurricane/hurricane-I-level.jpg

Tropical performance of Hurricane and Spitfire

There has been some recent discussion on this so I am posting some relevant info. From the Hurricane table, which does not include boost level, the Trop Hurricane I loses about 30 mph and the Trop Hurricane IIa loses about 7 mph. I can tell from the numbers that the Hurricane I is using 12lbs...

Range drop tanks and declining returns

Just thought I would post this info on hurricane 2 range. Notice how the increase from 45 to 90 gallon tanks doesn't get a large increase in range the increased weight and drag seems to use up most of the extra fuel capacity. Also notice how much fuel is used at higher boost rates. At 9 lbs...

UK goes all-in on a HMG class gun in the mid-30'ies

Who said they were? Not I. The weight was for comparison purposes as stated. Only the ones modified to take 12 lbs boost as a WEP rating. When introduced into service neither Hurricane or Spitfire were capable of 1,300 hp.

UK goes all-in on a HMG class gun in the mid-30'ies

The Belgians did build two Hurricanes with 4 x .50 mgs. They did not see any combat though. Imho the. 8x .303 armament has been over harshly criticised over the years. Between the hurricane and the spitfire they shot down thousands of ea with the"pea shooters". In the early war years limited to...

    Westland Whirlwind revisited

The Whirlwind probably could have been improved enough to be a viable fighter in the first half of the war. In the end it didn't pass the test of limited resources allocation. The RAF fighter needs were met reasonably well by the Spitfire/Hurricane, Spit 9/ Typhoon and the Spit14/Tempest...

    WWII Fighter Combat Statistics

The Hurricane gets no respect. From, "The Hawker Hurricane" Francis K Mason, Pub 1987, page 211. "Compared with claims recorded in 11,400 traceable air to air combat reports(Forms 1151), covering all RAF fighter pilot's claims, 55 per cent were by Hurricane pilot's, 33 percent by Spitfire...

Why American aces had lower scores than anybody else

I think it was in the "Grand Alliance" , that Churchill said something like before the US was in the war he didn't know if the Allies would win, but after the US was in he knew the Allies would win.
