Preparation for a new war - Occupation of southern French Indochina.
On July 29, 1941, a large number of Japanese vessels anchored at Saint-Jacques. This was Japan's invasion of southern French Indochina, which was named Operation Fu-go, but was carried out as "peaceful occupation" based on an agreement with the Vichy regime. However, Japan's advance into this region raised great threats for the allied countries due to its close proximity to America's Philippines and British Malaya/Singapore. The allies were to impose economic blockades against Japan soon. This operation was decided after the failure of Dutch-Japan economic negotiations for oil resources, intending to take advantage with German superiority in the European front and to secure time for the construction of air bases in FIC to prepare for the coming southern operation. On August 12, the Imperial GHQ instructed the 25th Army in FIC to construct the bases and begin training in the tropics.

Must all be officers otherwise they would know those things go faster if you get on and pedal.

The Brits and Aussies laughed at the Japanese for using bicycles instead of trucks in Malaya for the first few hours.

Then they discovered that the Japanese and their bicycles could walk across the remains of blown up bridges or ford the rivers with their bicycles and keep advancing or bypass the roads using walking tracks and come in from behind and that wiped the laughs off their faces pretty quickly.
