The KuKLFT or Austro-Hungarian air force is a forgotten air power from the First World War. I for one had no idea what campaigns or actions they fought in.

Its primary fighter through 1917, the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I looks ridiculously obsolete compared to other fighters of that era.

Here's a British S.E.5 of the same year for comparison.

The Kuk fighter units flew some rather more advanced machines than the Hansa Brandenburg D.I in your photo. Here's a sample

122.01.jpg

Phönix D.II 122.01 Flik 9/J

138.24.jpg

Aviatik D.I 138.24 Flik 56/J

153.256.jpg

Albatros D.III (Oef) 153.256

All these and others were produced in multiple series and were flown by skilled pilots in many cases. Both the Albatros D.III (Oef) and the Aviatik D.I entering service in 1917.

although the notes on the present day countries is rather misleading as the nationality of the indvidual was not that of the present state in many cases.
