FWIIW - that is one of the earliest factory installed Dorsal Fin in late block D-5-NA. They started arriving in ETO in late July. Ditto for the last block of P-51C-10-NT with the 'B' type DF. The image shown is ost December 1944 when all invasion stripes were finally ordered to be removed.

Also interesting they repainted/stenciled the serial # on the front part of the tail after painting the rudder.

4th FG too lazy to use white paint. No prob until dark blue rudder or black.

OTOH maybe it was easier to lead with white paint on rudder. My Father's WR-B 44-72253 JANE VI. It was later lost in MAC, then recovered and rebuilt by Pacific Fighters and being competed by Fagen Fighers.

Fuselage code looks (to me) as CV, not IV. IV was the fuselage code of the 369th FS while CV was the 368th (both 359th FG mind you). All other pictures of this a/c that I've seen where the fuselage code is visible, it's definitely IV but again......this sure looks like CV. Sure is possible this a/c could've been assigned to another squadron within the group for a short period. This is the only pic I've seen where the fuselage code definitely isn't IV.

Thoughts anyone?

It was not unusual for a repaired ship to be recoded and sent to another squadron. My Father's 354FS/355FG 44-14799 JANE IV was hammered by a flak train with ~200 punctures, belly landed - Nov 29. It was repaired and sent to 358FS/355FG coded YF-H. IIRC the Engineering Officer made the decisions to try to balance squadron readiness across the Group..

Received 1 AD ex USA on 02/08/45.
Issued 76 Sqn 10/09/45. Served with 76 Sqn in Japan.
Returned to Aust and issued to 78 Wing (Williamtown) 10/02/49.
On 30/11/50 allocated to School Land/Air Warfare.
On 15/03/51, approval given for conversion to components after removal of the engine.
History Card says intent was to use parts of the airframe as a target.
On 1/4/52 balance issued to DAP for disposal.
