Hello,
I think most of you know this video and this photo of "13" flown by Ken Walsh.

Walsh K. A.-F4U-1, 02310, mai 1943.jpg
It seems to be from these images that BarracudaCals (48009 & 48153) and Eaglesals (#150) made their decal sheets.
My first remark concerns the marking; we can see on the video (at 0:16 / 0:17, screenshot below) that the marking "viva !" is visible on both side of the nose (BarracudaCals shows only starboard side).
Walsh K. A.-F4U-1, 02310, mai 1943_1.jpg
But the other point are the 2 or 3?) victory markings under the cockpit...!!! Neither of them represented these victories. And both identify this Corsair as 02310 during May 1943 (late in the month for BarracudaCals).
IMHO, this Corsair could be 02189, the one which Walsh claimed his firt 3 kills on 1 April or could be 02310 before 13 May.
But I wonder if this "13" could not be James Cupp aircraft !!!???
According to my books, Ken Walh flew BuNo:02189 "13" on 1 April (3v), BuNo:02310 "13" on 13 May and 5 June (5v + 1 dam.), BuNo:02701 "?" on 12 August (2v + 1prob.), BuNo ? "114" on 15 August (3v), "?" on 21 August (1v), "?" on 23 August (2v + 1 prob.), "?" on 30 August (4v)
Other sources tell that BuNo:02189 "13" was flown during September 1943... Others tell it was BuNo:02350 and others tell that BuNo:02350 was flown during May 1943...

What is your opinion ? :)
Anybody to enlighten me regarding the Corsairs flown by Ken Walsh please ? :)
TIA
Stéph

Steph,
I think the confusion is a result of the title and caption attached to this video. While Walsh is shown getting out of "13" at the 1:07 mark, Cupp is then shown getting out of "14" at the 1:28 mark. As you probably know, it was not that unusual for Navy or Marine pilots to have a name, or some artwork, added to an aircraft, but most of the time, they flew whatever aircraft was assigned to them prior to takeoff. This was especially true when flying from a carrier.
Regards, Paul
