Oops, sorry Jan but the projects for these 3 Aces would have been as follows:

Bong's P-38H-5-LO SN42-66847 Oct.-Nov.1943
Bong R. I.-P-38H 42-66847.jpg

Bong's P-38J-15-LO SN42-103993 Feb.-March 1944

Hanson's F4U-1 BuNo17472 Nov. 1943
Hanson R. M.-F4U1 17472.JPG

Johnson's P-38L-1-LO (probably) SN44-23??? (unknown) Oct.-Nov. 1944
Johnson G. R.-P-38L.JPG

I still have a headache today :lol: but since I have P-38s in my showcase and the work of weathering on the F4U scares me, I think it will be a Ki-43 or a Ki-61 :)

Nice ones....

It's funny how no decals has been made (I haven't seen any) for Gerry Johnson's P-38's....

I'd fancy doing this one as well....with the Australian flag!

I've been thinking of doing Hanson's #596, the machine in which he's still MIA....

I'll probably do Bong's "Marge" P-38 Lightning at some point (I hope), but before then....DOWN BEAT!

#596 is often/always described as a F4U-1A, but if the BuNo is 17596 (as always given), this machine should be a Birdcage.
Explanations by Dana Bell here.
#590 BuNo 17590 was a Birdcage

#596 was my initial project regarding an aircraft flown by R. M. Hanson but too much uncertainty... Dana Bell explains that 17596 was delivered to FAA as JT174

Jan,
Is there a photo of Johnsons' plane showing his name above all the rising sun markers?
What kind of flag and its colors is that Little Dipper in the middle?????

These ones Bill ?
Johnson G. R.- P-38L, fin 1944.jpgJohnson G. R.- P-38L, fin 1944_1.jpgJohnson G. R.- P-38L, fin 1944_2.jpgJohnson G. R.- P-38L, fin 1944_3.jpgJohnson G. R.- P-38L, fin 1944_4.jpg

The flag in the middle is a Australian flag. On 15 Nov. 1943 Johnson mistook an RAAF Wirraway for a Zero and shot it down...
This "victory" was added on his last P-38 early in 1945.

I haven't found the full shot with the name yet but still keeping searching. Byt in the clipped image I found, it can be noticed that there was also an art on the nose applied. A bab/kid of the name "Jerry" applied ? Perhaps.

the source: the net.

Regarding the flag marking ... IMHO that's the modified Australian one used from 1903 to 1908.

Below the enlarged B&W shot of the flag and my rendition .... thoughts?

Steph, so far I've found White 83 "Sooner", P-38F-5 42-12655, is this one mixed up as a H-1, also numbered White 83?

I've only seen his L-5 Black 83 as serial unknown....
Jan, if you mean "black 83" with 15 victory flags flown during October-November 1944, it is "very probable" that this aircraft was an L-1.
Explanations/infos here

Maybe one day we'll can see the original photo of the one above right and maybe the serial will be readable...
