I bet they were paying a hejj of a lot more for their tickets than people now do. NZ to London when it first started was the equivalent of $25k one way. Now its about 10% of that.

What type of light is that in the center on the Auto Union?

It's a Notek light, for driving in blackout conditions.
The light source is beamed backwards onto a mirror, allowing a subdued light beam without the glare from a normal bulb, reflector and lens, and is masked from above, helping to "hide" from aerial recce, attack etc.

I had not seen the light before. An innovative idea. Seems to use the idea adapted later in the reflector gunsight. There was an aftermarket reflector assembly in the US during the late 1930s to mount on the steering column to see the instrument panel on the windshield when driving at night. A primitive heads up display.

The Notek was fitted to most, if not all, German military vehicles during WW2.
Here's one on an Opel Blitz truck.

We used a similar headlight hood on the Jeeps, although I believe it worked differently...

...here you can just see it on the driver's side fender, adorning the last Jeep off the Ford assembly line.

Not quite the same "system" as the Notek light.
It's basically a masked lamp, with a shroud to cover the glare when viewed from above, a design common to many vehicles during WW2, and fitted as a separate unit to the Jeep, due to the location of the main headlamps, where normal blackout masks would be difficult to add.
The Notek design allowed virtually the full power of the lamp to be utilised, rather than shining through the slot in the mask.
