Look at that pesky nose armor preventing the Groundhog from being the best fighter.....EVER!!!!
Do you think they took the nose armor off the Cobra I and Cobra II racers? I doubt that; I think it probably was integral to the gearbox.

I recall reading that a P-39 pilot said that one of the better aspects of the P-39 is that if some instruments did not work, you could get by with not much more than an ASI, a tachometer, and the gearbox oil pressure gauge, which is a rather odd "vital" instrument.
